The only music, arts and culture festival in the South Wales Valleys’ returns for its second year in the autumn. Billed as “a festival of writing, rock’n’roll and coal”, Velvet Coalmine runs between September 1st and 6th and takes over nearly every available space in Blackwood with a hugely expanded line-up. While literary, industry, art and children’s events take place on the weekdays all around the town, the weekend sees a massive three-day bill at the town’s recently refurbished Miner’s Institute. Bands confirmed to appear include much loved Newport four-piece Dub War, massively tipped duo Slaves and legendary US band Meat Puppets (playing their first ever Welsh show). The full festival line-ups are:
Friday 4th Dub War / The Voyeurs / Gwenno
Saturday 5th Slaves / Glen Matlock / Henry’s Funeral Shoe with DJ Don Letts
Sunday 6th Meat Puppets (first ever Welsh show) / The Noses / Fjords
Elsewhere at Velvet Coalmine, the BAFTA winning filmmaker Kieran Evans will curate a film festival with Manic Street Preachers’ Nicky Wire. A full bill of bands, films and events will be announced in the coming weeks.
